The Priory is built on the ridge that divides the Harbour from the Caribbean Sea, is considered by architects and scholars as the most outstanding building of character in Grenada, a Greek revival formaltered with Victorian details:  armonious asymmetrical composition; variety of forms, textures, materials and colours; towers,turrets; carved brackets; scrolls, panels, gables and pediments;spindles and latticework along porch eaves. 

ThePriory featured in St. George’s archival books and records, from“Conception Island” to “Architectural Design Guidelines for St.George’s”.

ThePriory also appears in “City on the Hill” by Willie Redhead who recalls that the property was indeed a Priory where the Dominican Fathers lived before the Vicariate was built within the Anglican Church. 

It is also named in the book “St. George’s. The Prettiest Town in the West Indies” (by George Brizan and Michael Jessamy). 

ThePriory is described as follows: “The Priory or the “Priest House” is believed to have been constructed in the 1700s by the Roman Catholics as a Presbytery, since it appeared in many of the maps and plans of the town during the 1760s.  

It was sold to a number of owners over the years, but a noted change is the addition of the front and the bay windows when the house was renovated in 1917.  The building ….. is “unique in Grenada”.  Both Anglican and Catholic priests inhabited the Priory before it became a private dwelling. 

Between 1996 and 2001 the property was fully renovated to an exceptional standard and has become the Jewel of St. George’s.  The Priory is now in the Government list of official historic buildings.
